Tomoji Tanabe, said to be the world’s oldest man, died Friday at his home on the island of Kyushu, in southern Japan. He was 113.
A city official in Miyakonojo on Kyushu announced the death. Mr. Tanabe was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest man when he was 111 years old.
Mr. Tanabe, a former city land surveyor, was born Sept. 18, 1895. He had five sons and three daughters, 25 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Japanese people have among the world’s longest life expectancies, nearly 86 years for women and 79 years for men. Japan’s centenarian population is expected to reach nearly 1 million — the world’s largest — by 2050, according to United Nations projections.
Japanese longevity is often attributed to the country’s healthy diet, rich in fish and rice. Mr. Tanabe’s favorite meals were fried shrimp and Japanese miso soup with clams, a city statement said. He drank milk, avoided alcohol, did not smoke and read the newspaper every morning, the statement said.
